RABID RED FOX MARKS 11TH CASE IN GREENBRIER COUNTY THIS YEAR
Full Description:
A red fox found just north of White Sulphur Springs in Greenbrier County has tested positive for rabies.
Health Department sanitarian Bonnie Morgan said a resident who had heard about a wild-acting fox alerted health officials after finding a dead fox in the White’s Draft area near W.Va. 92.
Foxes normally travel within a 5-mile radius, but can sometimes cover up to 20 square miles in poorer habitats, Morgan said.
This is the 11th confirmed case of rabies in the county this year. The virus has also been found in raccoons, cats and skunks.
Last month, a Greenbrier County toddler was treated for exposure to rabies after being scratched by a rabid cat.
State law requires all cats and dogs to be vaccinated every two years.
Rabies is always fatal in animals unless treated immediately.
